Approximately 90 percent of our staff come from colleges and universities in the
US and Canada. The rest are from many other countries such as New Zealand,
Australia and England.
Winadu is located in Pittsfield, MA. We are approximately 3 hours (by car) to
the west of Boston and to the north of New York City.
Interviews are conducted either in person or by phone. You will be notified if
you are being offered a position. With your offer you will receive a contract
and reference form. Upon notification, you will have approximately 10 days to
accept the offer. Each staff must complete 3 reference forms or letters, a
medical form, a CORI form, an I-9 and a W-4 form. All staff members have to
obtain a background check
Winadu provides a travel allowance towards the staff member's travel
expenses.
Each counselor is assigned to an age group during the orientation. A typical
cabin unit has 8 to 11 boys and 2-3 counselors. Counselors live in the cabins.
Counselors who are successful truly enjoy the day-to-day interactions in the
cabin setting. Counselors have little privacy as they are constantly in the
company of campers.
Staff members have five days off during the summer. A day off begins after
breakfast and concludes with the 1:00am check in. Staff are allowed to take a
"piggy back" day off during the summer that allows them to skip curfew and spend
extra time out of camp. Staff are assigned a day of the week that will be their
day off.
The days are warm and the nights are cool. We are in the mountains so the days
usually are warm without being uncomfortably hot. In the evenings, the
temperature tends to drop quickly.
There is a staff phone line where incoming messages are taken for staff. These
messages are given out at meals during the day. Staff members have access to pay
phones around the campus to make outgoing calls during time off. Mail is
delivered each evening. Staff members also have internet access during time
off.
Alcohol and drugs are prohibited at camp. Staff members who go out on evenings
off must check in upon arrival back to camp to insure they are sober. Staff
members who are innebriated when they return to camp are subject to immediate
termination. In addition, we do not permit our counselors to wear body piercings
while on duty in or out of camp.
Staff members are allowed to draw money from their earnings 3 times during the
summer. The advances are given at two week intervals as cash to the staff. Any
money not drawn is given to the staff in a final check at the end of the summer.
