The History of Winadu

A Sleepaway Sports Camp is Born

Winadu was founded in 1927 by camp pioneers, "Doc" Winnick, Mac Nadelson and Irv Dube (hence the name "Winadu.") They ran the camp until Shelley and Arleen Weiner purchased it in 1974. At that time, most boys' sleep-away camps focused on Indian lore and offered programs that gave equal time to arts & crafts, nature, woodworking and sports.
Shelley and Arleen broke the mold! They put greater emphasis on sports instruction, while maintaining the traditions of sleep-away camp and making all the other activity options available. Winadu soon became known as the premier boys' sports camp in America. The emphasis over the years has shifted from competition to teaching boys values such as sportsmanship, teamwork and trying one's best. What sets Winadu apart is the unique balance it strikes between providing both the quality instruction of a specialty sports camp and the supervision, fun and life lessons of a traditional sleep-away camp.
